Poppet’s Widgets (run by an amazing person called Dena) has burst on to the handmade jewellery scene this year, so I sat down with her to have a quick 5-question mini interview!

When did you first realize you wanted to become a jewellery designer?
Well, I never set out to be a jewellery designer exactly. I used to participate in art shows with my photography and customers requested “wearable art”, so I did a lot of research and started to make my photographs into glass necklaces. However, I’ve always had a love for books and I wanted to be able to wear some of my favourite characters and quotes. You know, to be able to carry a piece of a book with me at all times, and it just bloomed from there!
What’s your favourite part about being a designer?
Creating new pieces that I love and that I think people will love. I always strive for pieces of jewellery that are meaningful and that make people smile.
What has been the most valuable thing you’ve learned so far?
Probably the most valuable thing I have learned is that while I strive for perfection, nothing in this world is perfect (as much as that messes with my OCD personality). The Japanese have a wonderful world view focusing on the acceptance of imperfection (called Wabi-sabi). It is so much more involved than that, but basically they describe beauty as imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. So while I strive to make the jewellery the best I can, of good quality, and as close to perfect as possible, I have to accept that I am human, and not perfect, and that is OK. I hope that the time and energy I put into each piece shines through and people will know that it was made with love and the best intentions possible.
How do you decide what you want to create?
Where do you draw your inspiration from? Basically my brain never stops working and I have so many ideas of what I want to create. I try to make pieces that I like and are meaningful to me, and I hope that others feel the same. I draw a lot of my inspiration from the classics because they seem to evoke such emotion and are so beautifully written. But at the same time I know I am not the only one wearing this jewellery so I like to listen to my customers (and potential customers) to see what is meaningful to them, and draw inspiration from them as well.
What are you favourite books to read?
I don’t think I have a favourite genre. I like to read many different genres because I feel like each one satisfies a different part of me. I’m quite eclectic and need variety. I really love stories involving magic or fairy tales, probably because I believe I was born a princess with magical abilities but just have not been able to prove that yet (LOL). But really, I love magic and magical realism, fairy tale retelling, classics, historical fiction, southern fiction, contemporary, mysteries and thrillers. There is really not much I won’t read except pure romance and modern-day sparkly vampires (I like my vampires dark and brooding as they were meant to be). Some of my favourite books are The Night Circus, The Book Thief, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Harry Potter (of course), The Lunar Chronicles, and Sherlock Holmes. This barely touches on my favourites, but they are my go-to for favourites and re-reads.
