I’ve got a chunk of 4 books that won’t be getting their own reviews – so you know what that means! It’s Bitesize Review time! Check out 4 of my most recent reads in quick-review style below!
The Storm Crow by Kalyn Josephson – 5/5 stars
So I went into this thinking that I would like it – but I was SO wrong. I LOVED IT! What a GREAT surprise. This is what I was looking for in some YA fantasy. And guess what – it’s a duology! How rare! What a treat! I’m so excited to read the next book.
Ok so first of all – the opening is wonderful. It sucked my in completely despite purposely not giving us any context or world building. I was shook and devastated for the characters already and I didn’t even know them!
But once we got the characters and world building things just got better and better. I loved every page that I was with these characters and I found that the world building and writing was so rich! It was like a movie!
I really enjoyed the dialogue too.
I’m SUPER invested in the story and I really, REALLY can’t wait for the next one! I can’t wait to get back to Thia’s world and story!
FantasticLand by Mike Bockoven – 5/5 stars
Oh man this checked all of my boxes!
Theme park setting and mass gore and violence!
Warning, this book is quite harrowing at times. – I enjoyed the HELL out of it. But I know that not everyone will be able to stomach the idea. But if you liked Battle Royale you’ll be fine, because this is more intense than The Hunger Games when it comes to kids killing kids.
So there’s a big hurricane and some workers are trapped in a Disney-land style amusement park. There’s a shit load of food, water and shelter due to a pretty bad-ass contingency plan. BUT pretty quickly the employees Brel off into tribes and start torturing and killing each other.
It’s AMAZING! Told through a series of interview style chapters with people within the park (after the events) we get to see a breakdown of what happened, or what people thought happened, from different viewpoints.
Loved this book.
Depraved AND we’ll written! What more could a girl ask for?
Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh – 4.25/5 stars
This started out excellent. And remained that way almost all the way through, but not quite. Hence 4 stars.
I really enjoyed the space exploration parts of the book, when they are on the shuttle and the bits leading immediately up to the launch (eg like the training).
But we had quite a lot of flashbacks into *why* characters wanted to go to space etc. And I’m like ‘I genuinely don’t care! Just tell me the reason in a quick throwaway line! I don’t need w whole freaking chapter!’
But all in all I liked the characters, the technical talk seemed realistic (honestly I have NO idea because I’m not a literal rocket scientist) and wasn’t too burdensome or alienating (no pun intended) and the plot was, for the most part, pretty ok.
The conflicts were interesting and the dialogue seemed believable.
But I didn’t get an ending that I thought was satisfying – not after all that build up. But that’s just me.
All in all, a pretty stellar (pun intended that time) book all round.
Need by Joelle Charbonneau – 4/5 stars
Not too bad. I’ve figured out that I really like Joelle Charbonneau’s writing. I’ll get round to the Testing trilogy soon – I swear.
I think if I hadn’t already seen and read a bunch of similar stories about this sort of thing – an app that makes people do awful things and it’s all social commentary on social media use and abuse then I’d be really up for this. But I HAVE read several, so this kinda sits on the ‘meh-o-meter’. And that’s not its fault.
The writing is really good, the characters are interesting and sympathetic and I cared what happened to them. I found the pacing to be a little bit off at times – it sped up and slowed down a bit too erratically for my own taste. But all in all, not a bad book.
