Cover Redesigns! – Spare and Found Parts

spare and found parts redesign cover

Hello!

It’s cover redesign time again!

I started with These Witches Don’t Burn and then took on History Is All You Left Me. Now it’s time for Spare and Found Parts – you can also read my review of it here!

I was stuck in a rut for choosing my next redesign challenge, and I chose this one because the original cover (UK) is pretty detailed as it is!

So, as always, here’s a couple of things I want to mention before I show you my work!

I’m redesigning book covers for fun and to stretch my creative muscles!
I am not redesigning them because:

  • I think the originals are inherently bad
  • I want to be a designer
  • I think I can do better
  • Any other negative reason you can think of
  • I’m doing this for fun!

Sometimes I’ll choose covers that aren’t exactly my favourites and I want to re-imagine them. Sometimes I’ll pick covers that I absolutely adore, but want to see what I can do. Sometimes I’ll pick my favourite books. Sometimes I’ll pick books I don’t like. Sometimes I’ll pick books based on a vote over on my Instagram.

What I’m saying is this: There’ll be no rhyme or reason to my book selections!

So…now that all the disclaimers are out of the way, on to Spare and Found Parts.

Spare and Found Parts was a such a frustrating cover challenge for me because whatever I did, I just didn’t like. I can’t even say I really liked what I finally came up with – and I designed FOUR covers! I for sure have my favourite of the 4, but this hasn’t been my favourite challenge – I’m not gonna lie.

As always, I ended up putting all 4 on Instagram and asking for my followers to vote for their favourite to go head-to-head with the original cover!

Why did I choose this cover?: I felt like the original was really good (UK edition) and it really fit well with the story. So (at the time) I wanted a challenge to take on something that I felt already fit well.

Did I have an idea going in to it?: Nope. Frustratingly so. This was agony!

Did I like the book?: I honestly thought it was pretty ‘meh’. You can check out my review here if you’d like.

Are you happy with it?: I’m happy with only 1 design. The other 3 I’m not a fan of. One I straight up hate – I liked the idea but hated my execution.

OK! So here’s the original cover:

And here are all four of my versions…

This was the one that ultimately won the vote to go head to head though, and I’m grateful for that because it’s my favourite of the ones I did.

What do you think? I took to my Instagram to ask people what they thought and here are the results!

Spare and found parts final vote

This was the closest vote so far and I think people were being really generous. I do prefer mine in the end this time, but the original has gold foil, and ya girl loves foil!
I think this was less of a success and much more of an experience!!

I’m going to keep on doing this, because it’s a lot of fun! Keep an eye out for whatever cover I do next!

(By the way – I did an interview with Micaela Alcaino – a real book designer! So go check that out too!)
