Time for another cover redesign! A short while ago I started this adventure with These Witches Don’t Burn and then took on History Is All You Left Me and Spare and Found Parts. Now it’s time for The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas.
This one was a little more challenging than the other’s I’ve done so far, because the original cover is so minimalist, it’s hard to take it up a notch from there! Minimalism can be so perfect!
So, let’s see what I managed to do with it!
As always, before I start, here’s a couple of things I want to mention before I show you my work!
I’m redesigning book covers for fun and to stretch my creative muscles!
I am not redesigning them because:
- I think the originals are inherently bad
- I want to be a designer
- I think I can do better
- Any other negative reason you can think of
- I’m doing this for fun!
Sometimes I’ll choose covers that aren’t exactly my favourites and I want to re-imagine them. Sometimes I’ll pick covers that I absolutely adore, but want to see what I can do. Sometimes I’ll pick my favourite books. Sometimes I’ll pick books I don’t like. Sometimes I’ll pick books based on a vote over on my Instagram.
What I’m saying is this: There’ll be no rhyme or reason to my book selections! So…now that all the disclaimers are out of the way, let’s have a look at The Cheerleaders!
The Cheerleaders was an unusual challenge for me, it’s the most basic (and I mean that in a nice way) cover I think that I’ve redesigned so far. So I had to really think where I wanted to go with this one. I knew I wanted to keep the imagery of the cheerleaders, and I wanted some violent (but not too violent) imagrey too. I’m quite happy with what I created in the end!
I created 2 designs this time, both of which I liked, but I do have my own personal favourite but, as always, I put it to a vote on Instagram.
Why did I choose this cover?: I felt like the orignal cover suited the story pretty well. It did a good job of prepping the reader for what was to come. It was also minimalist – I’ve never attempted a minimalist design before. I’m not saying that I stuck with the minimalist theme, but it was good fun.
Did I have an idea going in to it?: For one of the designs I ended up with, absolutley! But not the other – it manifested as I started to create!
Did I like the book?: Not really. I remember not being satisfied by it – it kinda promised one thing and gave another. I wanted something a bit more intense and mysterious and threatening, and it just…wasn’t. But it was a 3 star read!
Are you happy with it?: I’m happy with both of my designs this time! The yellow one is my favourite, but my followers on Instagram had diffferent ideas!
Here’s the orignal cover:
And here are my two designs:
And here’s how Instagram voted:
Although the yellow one was my favourite – I think it has some Tarantino vibes – I went with what people voted for and put it up against the orignal:
So, as you can see, I lost pretty badly this time, although I dont think its really a loss. I do this for fun, and I learn something new each time. So thats a win in my book! I still really like my yellow one – but I’m proud of both and still like the original!
As always, Im going to keep on doing this because I have a great time doing this. In fact, I’m going to take on a classic next!
(By the way – I did an interview with Micaela Alcaino – a real book designer! So go check that out too!)
