Aliens and Magic Collide On Earth! – Differently Morphous Review

Differently Morphous audible cover

Yahtzee Croshaw is getting better with each book! Differently Morphus is probably his best book to date! It took a few chapters for me to be fully immersed and to figure out what was going on, but once I did I was really in to the story! Differently Morphous is a very unusual who-dun-it mystery!

There are quite a lot of characters in Differently Morphous that we have to get to grips with, which is a touch confusing to start with. However, each character is well thought-out and given their own personality and motivation that it becomes easier to place names to ‘faces’. The characters are not only relatable (for the most part) but are hilarious too, which is quite an achievement considering the majority of the characters are a caricature of types of people rather than characters in their own right.

As with all of Crowshaw’s work, the humour is dry, satirical and exactly what you’d expect from Crowshaw. There were also a few twists and turns which surprised me, although the final was a bit too ‘set-up’ for my liking and for the rest of the atmosphere shown in the book. It didn’t feel like a satisfying ending because of it. Differently Morphous is a quirky – no, weird – read but thoroughly enjoyable despite the hick-up ending.

Differently Morphous coverThe middle fell a little flat, but that’s been typical of all of Crowshaw’s books so far, but the magic all throughout the book felt plausible. I absolutely adored the ‘politically correct’ and ‘can’t offend’ storylines – you’ll know what I mean if you read Differently Morphous (which I recommend) but I don’t want to give away too much of the story!

As with Croshaw’s other books, I listened to this on Audible (scroll to the bottom for your free trial!) and usually I believe that Croshaw’s books would be better read than listened to, despite the author himself narrating the audiobooks. However, for Differently Morphous I felt like it would make a better audiobook than a print book!

Whilst fantastical, Differently Morphous is likely the most grounded in reality of all Croshaw’s books (but it’s still fantasy) and is the best written so far – but that’s to be expected as an author grows.

If satirical fantasy is your thing, I highly recommend picking up this book!
