I Will Put You Back Together – The Fourth Closet Review

Some people have incredible works of fiction on their ‘most anticipated’ lists. Not me, I had a FNAF (Five Nights at Freddy’s) book! I’d been waiting to get my hands on The Fourth Closet for ages! For those who don’t know, the FNAF books are pretty crap. But to me, they are gold. I know they’re crap, but damn it I really enjoy them!

They fall into the so-bad-they’re-good category and I couldn’t wait to rip through this book because I was dying to know the answer to the one question everyone who has read the books had: What happened to Charlie?

fnaf the fourth closet storyThe Fourth Closet won’t make any sense to you unless you’ve read the first two books in the FNAF series (which I have reviewed here and here) so if you’ve not done that, don’t bother reading this yet!

Also, something to keep in mind: The lore in the books is different to the lore in the games. I’m not saying there aren’t clues to the game lore hidden in the book, especially The Fourth Closet as there’s definitely some crossover.

The Fourth Closet did a pretty good job at reuniting the former cast of characters from both The Silver Eyes and The Twisted Ones – it was really good to see a lot of them again, especially Jessica who was much more fleshed out and had a lot more depth.

The Fourth Closet was definitely more violent and graphic than the previous two books in the series, and was easily the darkest, as it went into some pretty heavy torture sessions – but with most of it being left to the imagination it’s still quite tame compared to novels in the solid ‘horror’ genre.

Obviously I was hoping that The Fourth Closet would tie up some loose ends brought to light from the first two books – such as what the fuck happened to Charlie? – and it absolutely delivered,  but there were also some pretty good plot twists thrown our way that led the reader to draw their own conclusions.

fnaf the fourth closet storyThe human characters are obviously the ones we’re supposed to root for, but let’s be fair – we want to see which animatronics from the games are going to make an appearance, and finally – after 2 books – my favourite character finally showed up! Mangle! Mangle made a little bit more than a cameo but it was so good to see it show up! Also, the main bear (one of about 13 bears in the FNAF cannon) the one on the cover – the purple one – is that Funtime Freddy? I thought he was Pink? Either way, it’s good to see another Freddy on the offence!

“Her eyes met the yellow eyes of the fox head, now suspended in the air by rods and beams. But there was another set of eyes as well. Does it have two heads?

I’ve slated the writing in the previous two books for being…well…bad – because it is. But I have to admit that the writing for The Fourth Closet got a little bit better. It’s still not great, but it is slightly better. So good for the writers for honing their skills! However, there is still a distinct fan-fiction feel to the novel and unfortunately this is most apparent in the descriptives.

fnaf the fourth closet freddyThere were far too many scenes that just weren’t described well enough – it was damn near impossible to figure out what was happening at some points. I just couldn’t get a clear picture in my head, but other things – mundane things – were described in far too much detail. It’s such a shame.

Speaking of the writing, it’s quite morbidly funny to me that (at the time of writing) this book had an average 4.5 star rating. Really? I mean, I enjoyed it, but this isn’t award-winning literature! How has it gotten better ratings than some legitimate works of literature? That’s both awesome and terrible at the same time!

All in all, The Fourth Closet was a really fun return to the FNAF book world and I can’t help but wonder if there’ll be another one. Yes, this was a trilogy, but Scott Cawthon is pretty well-known for giving his fans unexpected surprises – especially as so much of The Fourth Closet is open to interpretation!

As with the other two books, if you’re not a fan of FNAF, the games or the lore, this isn’t for you – but for the rest of us, this is gold(en Freddy)!
