Stranger Danger has never been so dark or sexy! – Good Samaritans Review

There are some books that you pick up and within 3 pages you know immediately that it’s going to blow you away. Good Samaritans is 100% one of those books.

Good Samaritans is disgusting, dark, sick and twisted and is one of the best books I’ve ever read! It is absolutely unique and I’ve never read anything like it! The opening few pages contain murder, desecration of a corpse, suicide and auto-erotic asphyxiation – and we’re just getting started. Yet it never seems too much. Although that sounds like a lot, it’s handled in such a skillful way that you don’t feel bombarded with information or shock value.

The plot of Good Samaritans follows Seth Beauman as he sits ringing strangers at night whilst his wife sleeps upstairs, as he can’t sleep. He rings strangers from a telephone book and asks if they will talk to him as he’s hoping to make a connection with the right person. Meanwhile, Ant is working a job at the Samaritans in the hopes of saving someones life as he was unable to save his suicidal friend. However, a crossed wire means that suicidal Hadley Serf ends up talking to Seth instead of someone like Ant at the Samaritans. She connects with Seth and Ant becomes concerned for her well-being and decides to follow her in real life. Naturally, it’s all downhill for our characters from there.

“Because it won’t make your skin sparkle like it does your toilet basin. It will burn. It will blister. You will bleed. It will hurt like hell. Unless you’re already dead.”

Good Samaritans is an absolute roller coaster ride of a book with twisted, creepy characters that you can’t rely on!

I’m not over-hyping the darkness of Good Samaritans – please be aware that it is not for fragile readers. There are multiple graphic descriptions of sex, suicidal thoughts and violence to the living and the dead.  That being said, the detailed descriptions are clear, provoking and unforgettable and always masterfully handled.

“I thought about my father and my mother and my younger brother before I ran that blade through my skin, unzipping a dark-blue vein that released a beautiful crimson worm.”

Good Samaritans is full of short chapters which provided an almost pulse-like feeling for the reader. The reading experience truly was like a beating heart, speeding up and even stopping! Each chapter left on a cliffhanger without ever feeling desperate, forced or cheesy. The second half of the book is much faster but that’s not to say that the first half is slow, because it’s not.

The 5 characters are clear, fully fleshed out and their motives are clear – yet unclear, hence the twists! My only criticism was that DS Pate kind of felt a little bit jammed ion and I personally didn’t like the repetition that came with every one of his chapters.

I have to admit that I did see the final big reveal coming from quite a way away, but I guess that speaks more to how twisted my mind can be than the authors lack of suspense and shock building. With that being said, I didn’t see the first big reveal coming!

Good Samaritans is an absolutely gripping novel and Will Carver is a new author for me and I absolutely devoured the book! I will be looking out for this author in the future and will be hunting out his back catalog!

Good Samaritans is an undeniable 5 star read from me and I can’t thank Orenda Books enough for sending me an early copy for review!

“Maybe everything was a already silent. I clench my right fist and step up onto the landing. The bathroom is several paces down on my right-hand side. She can’t be alive.”
